Katrina Kaif (Hindi: कैटरीना कैफ; born July 16, 1984^[1]) is an Indian film actress who has appeared in Bollywood, Telugu and Malayalam films.

Kaif started off her career as a model and later made her Bollywood debut with Boom (2003). She had her first commercial success with the comedy Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya (2005) and received praise for her performance in Vipul Amrutlal Shah's commercially and critically successful Namastey London (2007). Later that year, she starred in the blockbusters Partner and Welcome.

Personal life

One of 8 siblings,^[2] Katrina was born on July 16, 1984, in Hong Kong^[3] to a British mother and a father of Indian Kashmiri origin. She grew up in Hawaii and then moved to London.

Career

At the age of 14, Kaif ^[4] started modeling for a jewelry campaign in London, and was subsequently discovered by filmmaker Kaizad Gustad, who gave her a part in his film Boom (2003). She moved to Mumbai and was offered a number of modeling assignments. However, filmmakers were at first hesitant to sign her because of her linguistic shortcomings,^[5] such as her inability to speak Hindi.^[6] Films that did feature her usually had her voice dubbed over by a native speaker of the film's language. This changed with the film, Namastey London (2007) opposite Akshay Kumar & later Apne (2007), in which she dubbed her own lines.^[7]
